The River Lineup

Deep within a remote Sumatran river system, a tidal bore moves through the jungle with the kind of rhythm that has nothing to do with ocean swell or wind. These are river waves, perfectly formed and endlessly repeating, travelling long distances through the tropical interior.

From our boat at water level, clean lines break in symmetrical succession across muddy golden water, the sky above muted cloud and pale blue, the glassy river surface below carrying the whole structure in quiet reflection. The waves continue beyond the frame in both directions, suggesting a lineup with no beginning and no end. Somewhere beneath that surface, crocodiles.

Some waves exist entirely outside the world most surfers will ever find.
