The Plume

Where incoming swell meets returning backwash beneath the Nazaré cliffs, the water has nowhere to go but up. A vertical plume rises from the collision, spray and mist surrounding it as the form reaches its full height against the dark sky.

The light here is arriving from the side and behind simultaneously, catching the edges of the rising water and separating the illuminated spray from the shadow within. It reveals the structure of the plume rather than its face, the texture from within rather than across the surface.
