The Shape of Light

The ocean spends much of its time changing shape. Surfaces rise and fall, edges appear and disappear, movement constantly replacing movement. Most of it passes unnoticed. Then there are moments when light and water arrive at the same place at the same time and something becomes briefly distinct.

Here, the wave gathers its shape beneath a black sky. The surface below carries a quiet texture while the crest lifts into illumination, its spray catching the light and separating itself from the surrounding darkness. Shadow settles into the face of the water, defining volume and contour, while the bright edge traces a line between what is revealed and what remains hidden.

Sometimes the smallest boundary between light and shadow is enough to reveal an entirely different way of seeing.
