Through the Lip

Teahupo'o arrives with weight. The reef forces the ocean upward fast, thick water folding into a heavy pitching lip that carries the full force of the Pacific behind it.

Light cut through that lip and found what sits behind all that moving water. The thick lip catching the light, the barrel below holding its smooth uninterrupted form. From the channel, the noise, the spray, the energy moving beneath the boats. The senses register it all before the mind has finished processing what the eyes are seeing.

The wave held its shape, drew its full consequence from the reef beneath and came down with everything the Southern Pacific had carried to this point. That is what this reef does.
