Morning Glory

There are mornings in the Mentawais when everything arrives at once. Warm light across the reef, long clean lines out of the Indian Ocean, light wind and water so clear the bottom is visible beneath the wave as it lifts and folds.

A lone surfer paddles toward it, the reef pass unfolding through the panoramic frame ahead of him in soft tropical light. The perfect wave, empty and waiting. The particular quality of a moment still to happen.

The Mentawais have drawn surfers across oceans for exactly this. Not the consequence of a heavy reef, but the rare and generous perfection of a wave that seems to have been waiting all morning for someone to arrive.
