The Alignment

Teahupo'o held its shape with a precision, the reef drawing the swell upward into a perfectly formed barrel, illuminated deep inside by the passing light.

From the channel, every part of the wave felt heightened. The thunder on the reef, the echo from the collapsing lip, the movement of water folding over itself with absolute clarity. Moments like this demand exact positioning. Boat, angle, timing, light and swell converging briefly before the whole structure collapsed back onto the reef.

Some days this channel offers something that cannot be planned for.
