Strange Calm

Shafts of light pierced through a heavy sky as long lines of swell wrapped down the points from Snapper to Coolangatta. For a brief window the ocean glowed beneath the approaching cyclone, every line and section illuminated against the darkened horizon.

There was a strange calm in the atmosphere that morning. The swell was building, the sky shifting constantly and the coastline carried the tension of something larger moving in from the open ocean. The Gold Coast suspended briefly between what the light was offering and what the storm was bringing.

Some mornings the weather and the ocean arrive at the same moment, and the space between them is extraordinary.
