Side Light

Late afternoon light arriving from the left catches the full face of a rising backwash form beneath the Nazaré cliffs. The illuminated side reveals everything, texture, spray, mist and the churning surface below, while the back of the form falls into deep shadow.

The light doesn't simply illuminate the water, it sculpts it, separating the detail on the lit face from the atmospheric darkness behind it and giving the rising form a presence and depth that flat light would never reveal.
