Remote Reef Run
When the swell aligned in 2013, I knew the window was there. Pohnpei isn't a destination you stumble across. It takes commitment, timing and a willingness to travel deep into Micronesia for a reef break that most of the surfing world will never see. Shane Dorian, Mark Mathews and Dan Ross made that journey with me, and from the moment we arrived, it was clear the ocean had timed it perfectly.
What we found was eight to twelve foot surf breaking with a consistency that felt almost mechanical, clean walls, long barrels, warm glassy water rolling across the reef with a rhythm that just didn't stop. For nearly eight hours, the three of them traded waves in a rotation that was as generous as the swell itself. Shane, in particular, was operating in a different gear entirely, reading every section with the kind of power and precision that only comes from decades of experience in serious surf.
This frame is everything I look for behind the lens. The light, the line, the surfer completely in command of a wave that demanded nothing less. Days like this are rare. When they arrive, you don't forget them.
