Through the lens, James ‘Jimmy’ McKean drops into a massive Shipstern Bluff wave, a moment defined by raw power, timing and commitment, where every second is a gamble and the ocean sets the terms.

Shipstern is notorious for its chaotic and unpredictable waves and on this particular day the swell was more monstrous than most. Jimmy, a local, faced down one of the Southern Ocean’s heaviest waves, navigating the shifting steps that only a handful of surfers could (or would) attempt.

This image was awarded the Red Bull Illume 2023 Energy Award, recognising a moment that captures both the force of the ocean and the precision required to meet it.
