End of the Road
Late May 2022 brought a series of long-period swells to Teahupo'o, the southern tip of Tahiti and quite literally the end of the road. The sealed road stops here and for good reason. Beyond it lies the world's heaviest surfable reef and on this morning it was operating at full consequence.
As the sets built through the morning, three surfers found themselves out of position when a larger wave approached. Two made it over the ledge. Rodrigo Reinoso did not. Caught high on the lip, he was pulled backwards as the wave folded forward. Suspended above the reef like the top of a waterfall, the full weight of the section detonated below him.
From the channel, everything felt amplified. The thickness of the lip, the scale of the impact zone and the particular silence that arrives just before Teahupo'o makes its point.
Three days later, our own boat was caught inside on an equally large swell, launched into the air and pushed back into the impact zone. No one was injured. Very expensive camera equipment now resides permanently at the bottom of the reef. The price we pay.
Teahupo'o does not distinguish between surfers and photographers. It simply moves and everyone finds their own version of consequence.
