Deep in the Barrel

The May 2013 Super Swell brought Teahupo'o to a state that few who were there have forgotten. The reef was drawing the full weight of the swell into something fast, heavily loaded and unforgiving over the shallow bottom. For those of us in the channel, it was one of those days where the scale of what was happening took a moment to fully register.

Peter Mel is an established presence in big wave surfing, with a career built on exactly these conditions. Here he is positioned deep inside the barrel, holding a clean committed line as the section runs hard through the reef pass. The wave is building around him and he is completely inside it, composed and centred, the green of the water closing overhead.

At Teahupo'o at this size, every section carries consequence. The shallow reef leaves nothing to negotiate.
