From the channel, the wave didn't immediately stand apart from the others. That's often how rogue sets work at Teahupo'o. They appear as part of the same swell line until they reach the reef and suddenly draw far more water than expected.

As the section stood up, boats repositioned quickly and the energy in the channel shifted immediately. Naiki held his line through the middle as the full scale of the wave revealed itself. One moment it looked manageable, the next it had everyone scrambling for position.

Naiki never broke rhythm.
