Southern Slab
Some surf locations need no introduction. Shipstern Bluff is one of the wildest and most dangerous waves in the world, for both surfer and photographer. Even the Great Whites don't seem to mind the bitter cold.
A complex beast with its own idiosyncrasies, born from deep water, powerful and unforgiving. Swell hits an uneven rock shelf creating steps, ledges and sudden holes through the face that must be negotiated at full speed. Make it through one section and another ledge is already drawing beneath you.
Mick Corbett is captured here in pure freefall, completely separated from the face as the slab stands vertical behind him. Because the drop happens over a shallow razor sharp reef with an enormous volume of Southern Ocean water surging behind it, moments like this can unravel instantly.
There's no half measure at Shippies. Taking on these slabs demands total commitment. A small crew exists, a breed of fearless wave hunters, Southern Lords who have redefined the meaning of hardcore. Enduring some of the most extreme beatings imaginable, they chase these waves at great personal cost.
This image comes from a two day session with a tight crew. Mick Corbett and his tow partner Jarryd Foster. Paddle surf wave animal Sandy Ryan. Local legend Tyler Hollmer-Cross. Big wave rider Danny Griffiths and a pack of heavy locals who know this reef better than anyone.
