In the Belly of the Beast
There are waves at Teahupo'o that stay in the memory long after the swell has passed. This was one of them.
Matahi Drollet was towed into position by his older brother Manoa, who read the wave early and placed him on the entry point with precise timing. That moment of placement, brother to brother, on one of the heaviest reefs in the world, carried its own particular weight. From the channel, once Matahi set his line, everything that followed felt inevitable.
The face of the wave was smooth and deeply reflective, the light catching the surface and briefly mirroring the curve of the board and the line beneath him. Matahi held his position through the barrel without adjustment, centred and composed as the wave folded around him. A line as clean as the reef would allow.
