Shaped by the Reef
Matahi Drollet moves through Teahupo'o with a composure that only comes from years spent understanding this reef at its most fundamental level. Positioned deep beneath the lip, his line remains low and precise as the wave draws forward around him. No excess movement, no hesitation. Just timing, awareness and complete familiarity with the energy beneath him.
I've photographed Matahi and Manoa Drollet for years at Teahupo'o. Their understanding of the wave is visible immediately from the channel. Positioning like this feels instinctive, shaped by a lifetime spent inside the reef pass, where small adjustments carry real consequence and nothing about Matahi's movement ever looks forced.
At Teahupo'o, that kind of knowledge is its own form of precision.
