On the Edge

The swell was forecast to ease. Instead it surged, building into something far beyond what anyone had predicted for Nias. By the time it filled in fully, even the most experienced surfers in the water understood this was different. The ocean that day was a cauldron. Fish traps broke from their moorings. Boats went over the falls in the takeoff zone. The normally sheltered entry points were gone, swept clean by walls of whitewater moving down the reef.

We were looking directly into giant black caverns, monstrous barrels, black holes. The waves were 8 to 15 feet but it wasn't the height that made them what they were. These swells were doubling, sometimes tripling up, stacking sections on top of each other with a force that compressed everything in the water into a single decision, go or don't.

Lucas Silveira went. In this frame he threads a line through a doubling section, an open face already becoming a closing wall, the full weight of the wave gathering behind him. The green of the water at this size is its own kind of menacing, thick and heavy and moving fast.

Control holds. The margin is almost gone.
