Deep inside the Barrel

Kauli Vaast, gold medallist, has established himself as one of the most composed surfers in the world's heaviest waves. At Teahupo'o that composure is visible in everything, where he positions on the takeoff, how early he commits, the stillness he carries once he's inside.

Here he is deep in a clean, powerful barrel, a thick running lip overhead, the reef drawing the wave into its fullest shape. He holds his line without adjustment as the section folds around him, moving through the energy rather than against it.

The light inside the barrel, the colour of the water. That is where Teahupo'o Gold comes from. Some days this reef offers something beyond consequence. This was one of them.
