The Drop

During the 2024 Eddie Aikau Invitational, every wave carries consequence. Position, timing and commitment are tested the moment a set approaches and at Waimea that margin is narrower than almost anywhere else.

This frame catches a surfer suspended in the drop, the board not yet fully engaged, the line not yet set. Around him the frame is alive with movement, other surfers, other boards, the particular organised chaos of a Waimea set during The Eddie. And above it all, the sun has caught the full face of the wave, turning the surface reflective and textured, the surfer reduced to a silhouette against it. A shape in motion, committed and airborne.

The Eddie has always been more than an event. It's a gathering built on respect, for the ocean, for the history of this place, and for what it genuinely takes to paddle into waves of this scale.

Moments like this are why I keep coming back to Waimea.
